Christian theology, which emerged under the Roman Empire (and subsequently became the primary focus of medieval scholarship), is thus concerned with analyzing biblical truths (e.g. the nature of God and the afterlife, humanity's relationship with God) and their implications for human life (e.g. religous practice, politics, law, ethics). Chivalry calls men to honor women, and to serve as their helpmates. Both the ancient Greeks and the medieval Europeans who contemplated and discussed these images understood that their revered ancestors had lived in an earlier and different kind of age.
