Nature had so provided that each man establishes for himself a code of moral concepts and principles which are applicable to the details of practical life, without the necessity of awaiting the conclusions of science. This entails the analysis of central concepts such as duty, right, harm, pain, pleasure and promise within (often ignored) theoretical perspectives such as deontology, utilitarianism, virtue ethics, and so forth. Make sure your sentences say exactly what you want them to say.

Avoiding being immoral is a very worthy endeavor; however, it is important to realize the immense gap from being "just barely on the side of the law," i.e. on the edge between moral and immoral, to being highly ethical and noble. At what point should you present your opponent's position or argument? Thus Aquinas also thinks meekness, clemency, and studiousness are parts of temperance. An account of morality based on the hybrid concept of rationality could agree with Hobbes (1660) that morality is concerned with promoting people living together in peace and harmony, which includes obeying the rules prohibiting causing harm to others.

Remember that other people have different ideas of morals, and accept that you can do no more than to follow your own code. For example, measles, mumps, small pox, pertussis, polio and Hib outbreaks have all occurred in vaccinated populations.13,14,15,16,17 In 1989, the CDC reported: "Among school-aged children, [measles] outbreaks have occurred in schools with vaccination levels of greater than 98 percent.18 [They] have occurred in all parts of the country, including areas that had not reported measles for years."19 The CDC even reported a measles outbreak in a documented 100 percent vaccinated population.20 A study examining this phenomenon concluded, "The apparent paradox is that as measles immunization rates rise to high levels in a population, measles becomes a disease of immunized persons."21 The disturbing implication here is that efforts to maximize immunization rates may actually be counterproductive.

Of this, Kant says: “Hence, if I were solely a member of the intelligible world, all my actions would be in perfect conformity with the principle of the autonomy of a pure will; if I were solely a part of the sensible world, they would have to be taken as in complete conformity with the law of nature i. governing desires and inclinations -that is, with the heteronomy of nature.” (GMM,121) For Kant, it is because we are beings with both reason and inclinations that we can experience moral goodness.

Their exemplary punishment, perhaps doing far greater harm to them than their drug use has ever done, will frighten others, especially the young, away from drug use. We are forced to create our moral values through our choices, and we have no choice but to make choices. The scientific classifications of love do have the validity that variations of love will exist within the different types of relationships, but still the classifications do not hold within them a depth of explanation of what creates love, and similarly there exist numerous classifications of ethics in western philosophy, but in none is there a depth of explanation of what creates an ethic.

This is my project, then, and one that I will not shy away from calling moral philosophy; but most of my inspiration has come from Heidegger's way of thinking. There are a host of theoretical positions too numerous to list here (but including contractarianism, emotivism, intuitionism, and rights theory in the West, and a host of religio-ethical systems such as Confucianism in the East). Ethical Power as a function of Desire: Deleuze responds to both Nietzsche and Spinoza by positing that an appeal to transcendence in morality is what prevents positive ethical behavior and thus "perverts" desire such that we can repress our own desire and separate ourselves from our own capacities and powers.

That said, we are not born equal, we do not contribute equally, we do not cause harm equally, so there will never be a perfect utopian world of equal people. MacIntyre (1984), the leading contemporary proponent of virtue ethics, explains that virtues are those dispositions that help us to sustain certain practices and achieve good outcomes by enabling us to overcome the harms, dangers, temptations, and distractions which we encounter and by increasing our self-knowledge and knowledge of the good.

A class assignment, a scholarship requirement, or an admissions essay needs you to write the unnerving personal ethics statement. Philosophers try as much as possible to get rid of this in their arguments, either by restricting the meanings of words artificially (but hopefully not too artificially) or by using additional terms or even subscripts to make distinctions. Ethics, or morality, is a system of principles that helps us tell right from wrong, good from bad. Roux (eds.), The African Philosophy Reader.
