Even in Aristotle's time, the beginning of ethical thinking, cultural bias could have argued against other perceived notions of the difference between ethics and morals. At first glance, it would appear that such study has little application in the real world.

In effect it says that the right thing to do is whatever an individual wants to do--when it is this very condition of individuals pursuing any and every desire that generates normative thinking in the first place. Those who oppose it see it as a threat to individual freedom and democratic dissent. The limit on the place where an abortion may occur now forms a restriction to women’s choices without providing a significant safeguard. An explication of the common distinction drawn between ethics and morality and the use of these terms in the discipline of philosophy.

Learning the major moral theories, getting more precise definitions of terms, learning about the different ways or categories of thinking about (and living) ethics helps us clarify our thoughts, understand and empathize with others, and gives us tools to help solve the difficult situations we all face. Morals, values and beliefs, however, do represent three different aspects of an individual’s way of life. From this chain of reasoning about our ordinary moral concepts, Kant derived as a preliminary statement of moral obligation the notion that right actions are those that practical reason would will as universal law.

The play follows a man’s journey as he comes to terms with his infertility and chooses whether to have a child via donor conception. Second, virtue is, for Kant, strength of will, and hence does not arise as the result of instilling a “second nature” by a process of habituating or training ourselves to act and feel in particular ways.

Excerpted from The President of Good and Evil. That might sound a little wacky, but it makes sense to me. (Oh, and a good diff. using religious morality, most Jews don't eat pork because they feel it's immoral to eat animals with cloven feet [tell me if I'm wrong here], where as in wide culture it isn't seen as any worse than eating a cow, or mutton). Very interesting information, and a bit frustrating from a psychologist’s perspective.

Practical philosophy is also divided into logic and ethics. If someone has a good character, wisdom about the world, and a fulfilled life, he will naturally act ethically in all he does. While we may want to persuade with our language and try to make someone feel our point, this is still maintaining that all of these statements are still just feelings. Since Edmonds would himself not push the fat man off the bridge, he is presumably not in the market for such a drug himself. And that insight is a way out of the dilemma of relativism.

Yet I know that however successful I may be in applying these tests of truth, the outcome is such that only one who stands where I stand will see what I see. Having never fully escaped the ghost of the Hegelian dialectic [9], Nietzsche traces the gargantuan battle of opposing value systems over two millennia: Christ as apotheosis of Jewish transvaluation of values; Christianity's eventual triumph of Rome, despite Rome's military victory [10]; the brief rebirth of the original, aristocratic morality in the Renaissance only to be snuffed out by the forces of German and English populism, which also breathed life into the dying carcass of Christianity; further defeats for the aristocracy during the French Revolution; the inexplicable rise of Napoleon, the last world-figure of consequence for Nietzsche.

It seeks to use truth and reality to develop a framework by which an act can be analyzed and judged as either ethical or unethical. But it is not successful; and with the qualifications, elaborations, and restatements of the fundamental version of the moral law we get the impression that Kant himself feels the inadequacy of the principle. Lucan Freppert, The Basis of Morality According to William Ockham (Chicago: Franciscan Herald Press, 1988).
