During the 1890s Elgar gradually built up a reputation as a composer, chiefly of works for the great choral festivals of the Midlands. It will show you the name of the composer and composition for any of over 13,000 melodies from classical and popular music when all you know is the melody itself. The stay was unsuccessful, however, and they were obliged to return to Great Malvern, where Edward could earn a living teaching. Elgar suffered a blow when Jaeger (the "Nimrod" of the "Enigma" Variations) died in 1909.

During the 1890s, Elgar gradually built up a reputation as a composer, chiefly of works for the great choral festivals of the English Midlands. In March 1904 a three-day festival of Elgar's works was presented at Covent Garden, an honour never before given to any English composer. Unlike most other opera composers, Wagner wrote both the music and libretto for every one of his stage works. Mozart supplemented his music-composing income by teaching and playing either privately or in public.
